OF NOTTINGHAM

Importers of toys, games & fancy goods

Elizabethan House c1860

In 1822 Josiah Corbett is recorded as trading as a smallware dealer in Bridlesmith Gate.  Corbett is not listed in the 1840’s but William & Charlotte Brailsford are trading as smallware dealers in the same area probably having acquired Corbett’s business.

Charles Beecroft came to Nottingham to seek employment in 1848 having completed his apprenticeship in West Bromwich and was employed by Brailsford.  Charles married Charlotte Brailsford in 1854 and together they traded as smallware dealers and fancy repository under the name of Beecroft.  The business moved to The Elizabethan House, 9 High Street, where the Beecroft family remained until 1862.

Beecrofts toy shops became a focal point for the children of Nottingham at various sites in the city centre for the next 100 years.  Beecrofts Toys are still fondly remembered by customers, who visited the city centre shops, Goose Fair and County shows, trading for over 150 years.
